What Does It Mean To Be A Parent?

The role of “parent” has a broad definition. According to the Merriam-Webster dictionary, a parent is “a person who brings up and cares for another.”

Being a parent doesn’t necessarily mean you biologically passed your genetics to a child. A parent can take on different forms, such as stepparent, grandparent, legal guardian or a combination.

Regardless of the form, one thing remains constant: A parent’s job is to raise children to be the best men and women they can be. It’s a huge responsibility, one that requires patience, love and understanding.

For many people, being a parent means:

1. You Take Care of Your Child.

Physically and emotionally, you are your child’s caretaker. From sleepless nights with a newborn to comforting your child after a hard day at school, you often put your child’s needs before your own.

2. You Are a Provider.

Being a provider goes beyond money, shelter and food. It also means making sure your child has what they need to thrive. Whether you’re budgeting for school supplies, saving for college or planning family meals, providing for your child is one of the ways you show love and commitment.

3. You Are a Protector.

From holding your child’s hand as they cross the street to teaching them how to stay safe online, you try your best to keep your child out of harm’s way. You also protect their emotional well-being—helping them navigate challenges, friendships and disappointments with reassurance and guidance.

4. You Love Your Child.

The love that a parent has for his or her child is incomparable. This love is shown in big and small ways—through hugs and bedtime stories, cheering them on from the sidelines or simply being present when they need you most.

5. You Are a Counselor and a Confidant.

Because you have your child’s best interests at heart, you are in a unique position to give sound advice. Whether your child needs help solving a problem, making a big decision or dealing with strong feelings, you’re there to listen without judgment.

You encourage your child to reach for the stars and remind them of their strengths when they doubt themselves. Over time, this trust becomes the foundation of your relationship.

6. You Are a Teacher.

Your role as a teacher is never done. You might be helping your child learn important life lessons, such as good manners, generosity, a strong work ethic or smart money habits. No matter the lesson, your guidance helps shape the person your child will become.

7. You Are a Role Model.

Children often imitate their parents’ words and actions. Your child’s little eyes are always watching how you handle stress, show kindness and treat others. That’s why it’s so important to do your best to lead by example. Modeling honesty, respect and empathy teaches your child to embrace these values in their own life.

Being a parent is one of life’s most meaningful journeys. While it brings challenges, it also offers countless moments of joy, growth and love that make it all worthwhile. It also means planning ahead to protect your child’s future. With options like the Gerber Life Grow-Up® Plan or the Gerber Life College Plan, you can help set your child on a path toward financial security and success.
